Courier

What Exactly Is A Courier?

This question may seem obvious, but there are many points to consider, all of which are essential to understand so you’ll know if you need courier insurance. The most straightforward way to answer this query is that a courier is an individual who delivers messages, letters or parcels to order, in a manner that is trackable. However, this answer fails to cover all of the ins and outs of couriering, such as what size of vehicle is being used, what is being delivered and who you are working for.

Here in the UK, the image that springs to most people’s minds when they hear the word courier is a man with a van delivering packages to various locations. There is, however, far more to being a courier today than this. Many people deliver items using their own cars, on a work from home basis. As well as smaller, independent couriers, there are also regional and national couriers. The range of items that are being delivered can also vary drastically – everything from food to electronics and even essential medical supplies. Indeed, many of today’s couriers may not even see themselves as couriers, while others may class themselves as couriers when in fact they are in the haulage industry or similar.

If a courier works for a major company such as DHL or DX Courier, they will likely class themselves as couriers as they are employed as such. However, those that are working as couriers from home may not see themselves as couriers at all and therefore may not even think courier insurance is something that applies to them.

Many believe they only require class 2 business use for their own vehicle, but this may not provide the cover needed if an accident takes place during the course of the courier work. Others think that, because they are delivering large-scale plant equipment or food items, they are classed as couriers, but this may not be the case. Even those that know for definite they are a courier may not be entirely sure about what sort of insurance cover they need.

Bollington aims to keep it simple and offers a package that covers all your needs, from goods in transit insurance to courier van insurance and liability insurance, in one go. Just one phone call can take away the stress and you can put the phone down safe in the knowledge that you are covered for any eventuality.
